ANS Board Committees
Executive Committee – is a standing committee, which has
authority as
delegated by the Board of Directors. It consists of the four
officers and additional
Board members who are elected annually by the Board in November.
The
Committee acts on the Board’s behalf when convening a full Board
meeting is
impractical. Typically, it meets during the months between
regular Board
meetings.
Finance Committee – is a standing committee, composed of the
Treasurer and at
least two other persons well qualified in financial matters. The
Committee is
responsible for the management of all investments of the
Society, and may
employ, in behalf of the Society, such investment agents or
advisers as it deems
necessary. It oversees and reports on the financial condition
and activities of the
Society, including recommending an annual budget and a reviewing
the annual
audit.
Governance Committee – is a standing committee, composed of
at least two
directors, which ensures the board understands it goals and
carries out its duties
in an effective and appropriate manner.
Education
Committee – provides oversight and guidance for the Society’s
educational programs. It assists with identifying priority needs and
developing
strategies for increasing participation. The Committee periodically
reviews
educational programs and new initiatives, to evaluate compatibility
with ANS
mission. It reviews programmatic goals and activities and makes
policy and
procedural recommendations.
Conservation Committee – provides guidance and oversight for the
Conservation programs, which includes planning and participating in ANS
advocacy activities, including legal and regulatory matters and
policy-oriented
educational activities. The Committee ensures compatibility with mission
and
directives of the Board.
Development Committee – provides guidance and oversight for the
Society’s
fundraising program, which includes assisting with identifying,
cultivating, and
soliciting gift solicitations, major donors, corporate and foundation
donors and
other private funds to ensure the Society has sufficient funds to pursue
its
mission. The Committee is attentive to the Society’s mission, programs
and
public profile and an understanding of its resource needs.
Communications Committee – provides guidance and oversight for
communications to members, supporters, targeted groups and the public in
general, including printed and digital publications, the website,
promotions,
outreach and appeals. The committee provides guidance to promote a
cohesive
communications effort
Rust Committee
– provides oversight and support to the Rust Nature Sanctuary in Loudoun
County, VA. The Committee is responsible for developing and
overseeing the implementation of strategic, management and financial
plans for the Sanctuary; and for ensuring that these plans are
compatible with the ANS mission, goals and objectives.
Buildings & Facilities Committee - provides
guidance on annual capital expenditures to ensure that investments being
proposed in buildings and facilities are addressing the highest priority
items and that the proposed costs are reasonable. Oversees the
preparation of "green" investment plans for buildings and facilities in
each of the ANS sanctuaries, and reviews proposed construction and
renovation projects to ensure that they will satisfy ANS needs, be
consistent with the ANS mission, and are cost effective.
